PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for measuring, in real time, the force in the width direction and the force acting in the radial direction on a running tyre, thereby making it possible to estimate the road surface friction coefficient in the vehicle lateral direction. SOLUTION: A tyre is rotated on whose tread part asymmetrical magnets are disposed each comprising N and S poles opposed to each other along the tyre width direction and different in magnetic pole width. A magnetic field from the magnets is detected by a magnetometric sensor provided on a non-rotating portion of an axle. Tyre-widthwise force and tyre-radial force acting on a tread of the tyre are found in real time from temporal change in flux density of the detected magnetic field. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
