PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inorganic fiber having excellent heat-resistance comparable to an alumina silica fiber, excellent solubility in organism and high water resistance to allow the dispersion/flocculation treatment of the fiber in water. SOLUTION: The inorganic fiber contains SiO<SB>2</SB>, MgO and SrO as essential components, the weight-average ionic radius of the alkaline earth metal in the inorganic fiber is 66-90 pm and the content of SiO<SB>2</SB>is 70-80 wt.%. The invention further provides the above inorganic fiber provided that the fiber further contains CaO and/or BaO, the above inorganic fiber having the solubility of≥1% in physiological saline water and≤4% in distilled water, the inorganic fiber exhibiting a shrinkage of≤3.5% measured by forming a preform with the inorganic fiber by vacuum forming and heating the preform at 1,260°C for 24 hr, and the inorganic fiber having an SrO content of≥0.2 wt.%, preferably≥1.0 wt.%.
