PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which has superior basic performances of visibility, rewritability, storage of a display image, etc., and superior flexibility, thinness, and portability and is capable of colored display and retouching. SOLUTION: On a support, a layer is formed containing coloring matter discoloring with light and restoring itself to the original color with light weaker than the light used for the discoloration or thermally.
