An image recognition apparatus having a high image recognition ratio at a reasonable cost. The image recognition apparatus (1) recognizes behavior of a player in a sport performed in a region partitioned by a an obstacle such as a net, from a program being broadcast or a material video before being broadcast or a content recorded on a recording medium such as a VTR. The apparatus includes a score information fetch block (101) for fetching score information representing scores of players as the time elapses, play event information fetch block (107) for fetching play event information representing behavior characteristic for a player, from the obstacle and a player contained in the content and the video information showing the score information displayed on the screen, and an image content recognition block (108) for comparing the score information immediately before the time when the play event information is generated with the score information immediately after that time and referencing the result of the play event information so as to recognize the image content shown by the play event information.
