The method involves branching (11,14) test sub-beams (S0-S2) from the carrier beam without causing distortion; treating the sub-beams by subjecting a first one to abnormal dispersion and subjecting at least a second and/or third sub-beam to normal or no dispersion; pulsed sampling of the dispersed sub-beams to obtain electrical intensity values (I0-I2) ; and computing test parameters from the intensity values as a quantitative measure of the transmitted signal quality. Independent claims are also included for : (1) an arrangement for testing the quality of an optical transmission signal; (2) and for an application of the method and/or system. |
