PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for reading an image by using a monochromatic image sensor provided with three shift registers that has a reduced the manufacturing cost and is not vulnerable to external noises. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with an analog front end IC 5 having three channels and incorporating: programmable gain amplifiers (PGA) 47 to 49 corresponding to gain adjustable channels; an analog / digital converter (ADC) 9; and a multiplexer (MUX) 7 for sequentially providing signals amplified by the programmable gain amplifiers 47 to 49 to the analog / digital converter 9. The image reading apparatus amplifies a pixel signal outputted from each channel of the monochromatic image sensor or a color image sensor by giving the signal to the corresponding PGA and allows the analog / digital converter 9 to convert the pixel signal outputted from the PGA into pixel data.
