PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device in which a recording process is quickly and surely conducted by placing an optical head at an optimum position for standby after the completion of a recording (or a reproducing). SOLUTION: The device is provided with: a standby position determining circuit 27 which detects the physical properties of various regions of an optical disk and determines the standby position of an optical head 10 in accordance with the properties after the completion of recording or reproducing; and control mechanisms 17, 18, 19, 20 and 25 which control the position of the head 10 so that the head 10 moves and places at a standby position in accordance with the determined standby position. In particular, a stable and sure recording process is restarted by placing the head in standby at equal to or more than two tracks in front of a not-recorded region and a recording process is conducted by putting priority on the remaining unrecorded regions.
