PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a cavity in a base member by which the base member can be formed highly accurately and inexpensively. SOLUTION: The method is provided for forming the cavity 2 in the base member 1 made of a plastically workable metal plate 10 of a prescribed thickness. In the method, a plurality of through-holes 11a in the same direction of the pushing direction of a punch 12 is formed in a die 11 opposite to the lower end surface of the punch 12 for forming the cavity 2 or in the punch 12. When the punch 12 is pressed from one direction side 10a of the metal plate 10, the metal thickness part of the cavity 2 is shifted into the plurality of through-holes 11a formed in the die 11 or the punch 12. After forming a plurality of columnar projections 13 so as to project from the other direction side 10b of the metal plate 10, the cavity 2 is formed in one direction side of the base member 1 by cutting off and removing these columnar projections 13, and the other direction side is formed flat.
