The control system undertakes adaptive vehicle spacing and/or cruise control (6, 8) (ACC). It receives an indication of danger as an input. This is an urgency signal (d). It is derived from e.g. relative speed and/or spacing, related to the vehicle ahead. The braking system is electronically-controlled to distribute the braking force demanded, between the friction brakes (2) and the retarder (4). The electronic control system is additionally designed to distribute the braking as a function of the urgency signal (d).
