PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detector which is capable of promoting a reduction in a gap length and an increase in an output. SOLUTION: First antiferromagnetic layers 25 and 25 and second antiferromagnetic layers 33 and 33 are not provided above and below the track widthwise center C of a first free magnetic layer which is varied in a direction of magnetization by an external magnetic field, and above and below the center C of a second free magnetic layer 30, so that the magnetic detector can be reduced in overall thickness at its center C (track widthwise region), and the gap length G1 can be made small. A shunt current flowing through the first antiferromagnetic layers 25 and 25 and the second antiferromagnetic layers 33 and 33 as branching off from a sense current can be reduced, so that the magnetic detector is capable of reducing its current loss and improving its magnetic detection output.
