PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain refined and smooth gray scale expression like a photographic image and to shorten processing time required for display with a simple circuit construction by using a display element, represented by an electrochromic display element, which has no viewing angle dependence, of which the display density corresponds to the amount of cumulative charge in a display region and which maintains the display density even after charge supply is stopped. SOLUTION: The display device is provided with a power source to supply a constant current to the display element, a switching means to control the charge supply from the power source, and a controlling means to control the ON period of the switching means with a pulse width. Furthermore, by adding a transistor having a capacitor connected on the drain side thereof as a controlling means, drive of the next line is started without waiting the completion of charge accumulation for one line.
