PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly open and close a toilet seat or a toilet seat lid even in driving the toilet seat or the toilet seat lid to be closed. SOLUTION: This automatic opening and closing device includes a driving motor for driving the toilet seat to be opened and closed and a transmission means for decelerating the power from the driving motor and transmitting the same to the toilet seat. In driving the toilet seat to be closed, the toilet seat driving motor is driven at high speed up to a designated angle, the application of an electric current to the toilet seat driving motor is stopped to a second designated angle, and the toilet seat driving motor is driven at low speed up to the second designated angle and more. Thus, after high speed driving, the toilet seat is caused to continue the closing operation from the designated angle to the second designated angle by inertia and dead load, and the toilet seat can be decelerated at the designated angle and more to be gently closed. Accordingly, it is possible to prevent a phenomenon that the toilet seat causes pulsation like vertical vibration round the support shaft. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
