PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having a wide angle of viewing field and causing no diffraction phenomenon. SOLUTION: A transparent electrode layer 1 is formed on one surface of a transparent substrate 2 and comprises a transparent electrode material 3 and a portion having no transparent electrode material 3 in random positions, namely, holes 4. The holes 4 are not necessarily in the form of circles only but can be in any forms, or can be the mixture of various kinds of forms. When a voltage is applied, the alignment directions of liquid crystal molecules near the hole disperse in a wide angle around the center axis of the hole to generate an extremely wide angle of viewing field. As the holes 4 are randomly distributed, no diffraction phenomenon is caused even when a large number of the liquid crystal display elements are arranged as pixels. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
