The invention relates to a continuously variable transmission. Known transmissions of the aforementioned kind comprise a toroid variable speed gear, in which a roller can be swiveled in response to pressure forces acting upon a hydraulic setting piston for modifying the transmission ratio. A slide comprises four control edges and is used to impinge the piston with a hydraulic medium. According to the invention, two rotary slide valves are used, each rotary slide valve having one slide with only two control edges. The rotary slide valves are impinged upon with a control pressure by one solenoid control valve each. The invention also relates to a continuously variable toroidal drive for motor vehicles.
