<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inverter device which can vary its protection level as required and an air conditioner which performs the protection taking account of the operation state of load, etc. <P>SOLUTION: In the inverter device which performs the protection of a power transistor module 6 by detecting the current flowing to the power transistor module 6 with a current detector 8 and determining whether the above current is an overcurrent or not with a protective circuit 9, it becomes possible to optionally vary the protection level of the protective circuit by providing a protection level adjusting means in this protective circuit 9 and inputting an protection level changing signal Z into the protective circuit 9 from an inverter circuit 5.
