PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collapsible barrel type camera which can prevent the breakage of its lens barrel by a sudden impact. SOLUTION: A self-weight detecting switch is provided at the metal fitting part of a strap attaching part 26. When a camera 10 is hung by a strap 28 while a photographing lens 14 is drawn out from a camera body 12, the self-weight detecting switch is turned ON and a microcomputer in the camera 10 (CPU) performs processing for evacuating the lens barrel 15 from an extension position to a barrel-collapsed position automatically after receiving the detection signal to store the lens barrel in the camera body 12. Moreover, after the elapse of a prescribed time with the barrel stored in the camera body 12, an automatic power turning off processing is executed by the microcomputer and a lens barrier 30 is closed and also the power source of the camera 10 is turned off.
