PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase a light output of an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display unit. SOLUTION: An active matrix type OLED display unit comprises a substrate; a thin film transistor (TFT) layer formed on the substrate; a layer for deciding a periodic grating structure; a first electrode layer formed on the periodic grating structure and matched to the grating layer; an OLED material layer formed on the first electrode layer and matched to the grating structure; and a second electrode layer formed on the OLED material layer and matched to the grating structure. Since the first and/or second electrode layer(s) are/is metal layer(s), the grating structure induces surface-plasmon cross-coupling in the metallic electrode layer(s). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
