PURPOSE: To resolve the problem that it is impossible to cope with sudden power-off because a time of at least one field period is required to write a one-picture portion of white data or black data in the case that white display or black display is performed at the time of power-off to prevent disturbance of a picture. CONSTITUTION: In an active matrix liquid crystal display device wherein pixels 20 including pixel transistors, for example, TFTs 21 as active elements are arranged like a matrix, TFTs 21 of all the pixels 20 in a pixel part 12 are collectively made active at the time of power-off, and simultaneously, all horizontal switches 44 are made active to give the same potentials as counter electrodes of pixels 20 to all data lines 25-1 to 25-x, and thus discharge routes for remaining charge in all the pixels 20 are formed so that remaining charge in all the pixels 20 can be instantaneously discharged through the discharge routes.
