PURPOSE: A method for estimating channel response of a digital transmitting/receiving system and initiating a coefficient of an equalizer is provided to estimate a channel by using a synchronizing sequence and a training sequence and initiate a coefficient of an equalizer by an impulse response of the estimated channel. CONSTITUTION: A method for estimating channel response of a digital transmitting/receiving system and initiating a coefficient of an equalizer includes the steps of calculating a cross-correlation between a training sequence stored in a memory and an input training sequence(S10), and extracting and filtering channel impulse response estimations for a feed-forward filter part and a feedback filter part from the calculated cross-correlation value(S20). An initial coefficient of the feed-forward filter is obtained from the estimated channel impulse response(S30). An initial coefficient of the feedback filter is calculated by the convolution between the initial coefficient of the feed-forward filter and the channel impulse response of the feedback filter(S40). The coefficient of the equalizer is initiated by the initial coefficients of the feed-forward and feedback filters(S50). After the initiation, the equalizer operates in the normal mode(S60). The previous steps are carried out when the system is reset during the operation of the equalizer or a new training sequence is input(S70).
