PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound which efficiently generates a halogenated free radical while effectively utilizing a spectrum of an active ray and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: [4-(Tribromomethylsulfonyl)phenyl][4-(phenylthio)phenyl]methanone represented by formula (1) is produced by oxidizing and brominating [4'-(phenylthio)phenyl]-4-oxophenylthioglycolic acid or a salt thereof represented by general formula (2)(wherein, M is a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal atom).
