The valve (1) is urged toward its closed position by a powerful spring (3) acting on a cup-shaped stop (2) on top of the valve stem (12). The valve actuator has a flat armature plate (9) moving between two flat pole faces (8). Coils are accommodated in annular grooves in iron yokes. A rod (10) attached to the armature plate and may press on the end of the valve stem to open the valve. Springs (13,16) return the armature to a central rest position (R) when both coils are switched off.
