PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display that reduces luminance loss on the high luminance side while controlling light in the two stage structure of high and low luminance using a cold cathode tube for the back light. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display is composed of the following: an LCD; a first diffusion plate which, installed on the back of the LCD, serves to improve unevenness of luminance; a phosphor film which, installed on the back of the first diffusion plate, absorbs ultraviolet rays to emit fluorescence in the visible region; a high intensity lamp installed on the back of this phosphor film; a wavelength selective film which, provided on the back of this high intensity lamp, transmits ultraviolet rays; a second diffusion plate which, installed on the back of this wavelength selective film, serves to improve unevenness of luminance; a UV cold cathode lamp which, installed on the back of this second diffusion plate, works as a low intensity lamp; and a reflection sheet which, provided on the back of this UV cold cathode lamp, reflects ultraviolet rays.
