PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an isocyanate having an isopropenyl group or a vinyl group, useful as a raw material for widely used polymers such as a urethane modifier, a raw material for plastic resins and the like. SOLUTION: The method for producing the isocyanate is to prepare a carbamic acid ester having the isopropenyl group or the vinyl group as an intermediate by reacting a divinylbenzene with a carbamic acid ester in a polar solvent such as an alcohol, an ester, a ketone or an ether in the presence of a cation exchange resin catalyst, neutralize the reaction mixture containing the intermediate by using an anion exchange resin, subsequently distil the isocyanate out of the reaction system by reacting the same using no solvent or in a hydrocarbon solvent at 50-250°C under a reduced pressure in the presence of a basic catalyst.
