FIELD: decontamination of contaminated materials, particularly low-temperature decontamination without combustion thereof. SUBSTANCE: method involves bringing into contact contaminated materials and hazardous substances contained into the first dry heated container under ambient pressure with vapor heated up to 560 C; providing contact between contaminated materials and vapor over at least 15 min., which results in removal of hazardous substance from contaminated material; extracting the first gas flow containing hazardous substance from the first heated container with the first gas flow including condensable and non- condensable residues; heating the first extracted gas flow under ambient pressure in the second dry container to about 500 C; holding the first flow heated to 500 C into the second container over at least 1 sec. into atmosphere containing vapor with concentration above 150% of stoichiometric concentration such that at least 99 mas% of hazardous substances convert into non-hazardous substances; removing the second vapor flow from the second container with the second vapor flow containing condensable residue and non-condensable residue and hazardous substances concentration being less than 100 mg/mol; increasing condensate pH at least to 8.0 to reduce hazardous substance content into concentrate up to 1.0 mg/l; catalytic processing non- condensable residue in the second flow in presence of oxygen under ambient temperature and ambient pressure to reduce hazardous substances content to value not exceeding 1.0 mg/cu.m.
