The apparatus described in Specification 1,083,895, for preventing the formation of voids in newly extruded thermoplastics insulation on a cable core 1 is modified by having a conduit 9 linking the gas circuitry 8, 10, 11 to a liquid storage tank 5 from which liquid is circulated by a pump 6 through compression chamber 3 and drainage pipes 12, 13. Further, a second gas chamber is provided at the downstream end of chamber 3 and the liquid is heated by a heater 7. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), pressure is maintained in chamber 3 by a cylindrical brush 23, see also Figs. IIIa and IIIb (not reproduced), at the downstream end of the chamber. In a second embodiment, Fig. IV (not shown), two compression chambers are arranged in series, the temperature of the water circulating in the downstream chamber being below that circulating in the upstream chamber.
