PURPOSE: A method for separating and preparing alginic acid is provided, to obtain alginic acid having a uniform distribution of molecular weight in multistep. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of fixing a dialysis membrane with a molecular weight cutoff of 500 in a chamber and injecting a drive circulation liquid into the chamber; putting an alginic acid sample on the chamber; circulating a drive circulation buffer aqueous solution with a constant velocity; fraction collecting the alginic acid passed through a semipermeable membrane; and fixing a dialysis membrane with a molecular weight cutoff of 1,000 or the next dialysis membrane in a chamber and repeating the previous steps. Preferably the drive circulation buffer aqueous solution is NaNO3 solution or 0.3 M NaCl deionized water solution of pH 4.0; and the circulation velocity is 0.1-5 ml/min.
