PURPOSE: Provided is a process for preparing 5,11-dihydro-6H-dibenz£b,e|azepin-6-one, thereby carrying out the process under mild condition using iodic acid and red phosphorous as catalyst and preparing a desired compound in higher yield through post-treatment. CONSTITUTION: A process for preparing 5,11-dihydro-6H-dibenz£b,e|azepin-6-one of the formula(I) comprises reducing a compound of the formula(II), wherein the reaction catalyst is iodic acid and red phosphorous; the amount of iodic acid used is 1.0 to 20.0 equivalent, preferably 2.0 equivalent; the amount of red phosphorous used is 1.0 to 20.0 equivalent, preferably 1.1 equivalent; and the reaction solvent is acetic acid; the reaction temperature is 100 to 120 deg. C; and the reaction time is 1 to 48 hours, preferably 12 to 20 hours.
