PURPOSE: An apparatus for discriminating the type of a vehicle and a method for the same are provided to discriminate the type of the vehicle without stopping the vehicle by only using the photographed image. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for discriminating the type of a vehicle(1) includes a vehicle detector(2), a first camera(3), a second camera(4) and an image processor(5). The vehicle detector(2) detects the vehicle approach(1). The first camera(3) is installed on the top of the approaching vehicle(1) and the second camera(4) is installed on the side of the intruding vehicle(1). And, the image processor(5) extracts the contour of the top portion and the side portion from the image photographed from the first and the second cameras(3,4) and measures the height, length, width and errors therefor from the extracted contours.
