PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auxiliary light projector which generates striped pattern-like diffraction patterns lined up with a plurality of straight lines and projects these patterns as patterns for focus detection having a high contrast to a subject. SOLUTION: The auxiliary light projector has a laser beam system 22 and a diffraction plate 21 for diffracting the laser beam from the laser beam system 22. The diffraction plate 21 is formed by longitudinally, transversely and periodically arraying microlenses 23a, 23b, 23c and 23d varying in the radii in a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction with the periods changed in the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction and by periodically changing the heights of the microlenses 23a, 23b, 23c and 23d and projects the diffraction patterns 20 of the laser beam from the diffraction plate 21 as the patterns for focus detection to the subject.
