PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent leakage of a waste ink due to its tendency to adhere and deposit on the surface in the case of discharging the waste ink intermittently by a small amount into a waste ink receiving means. SOLUTION: A waste ink storing means is provided for temporarily storing a waste ink vacuumed by a vacuuming means before discharging the same into a waste ink receiving means in an ink jet recording apparatus using an ink to be easily thickened and adhered, such as a pigment ink. At the time the waste ink amount in the waste ink storing means exceeds a predetermined amount, or at the time the time of storing the waste ink in the waste ink storing means exceeds a predetermined time, the waste ink is discharged to the waste ink receiving means.
