PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head discharge characteristic maintaining device which can make the adhesion surface in the elastic member of a capping member always adhere to the nozzle forming surface of a recording head surely and a recording apparatus fitted with the device. SOLUTION: The capping member 10 has the elastic member 11 which adheres to the nozzle forming surface of the recording head and seals the nozzle forming surface. Ribs 12 which regulate the displacement of the elastic member during the sealing are formed on the inner wall surface 11b of the elastic member opened at prescribed distance from the adhesion surface 11a of the elastic member adhering to the nozzle forming surface. In this way, after the whole circumference of the adhesion surface in the elastic member of the capping member is crushed uniformly by proper press force, the upper surface of each rib contacts the nozzle forming surface to prevent the close contact surface from being crushed further, so that the nozzle forming surface can always be sealed surely.
