PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a high-qualityα-oxocarboxylic acid in high yield by hydrolysis of the correspondingα-oxocarboxylic ester. SOLUTION: The method for producing theα-oxocarboxylic acid comprises feeding a mixed feedstock comprising theα-oxocarboxylic ester, an alcohol and water to a distillation column and hydrolyzing theα-oxocarboxylic ester while extracting the alcohol in the feedstock and a by-product alcohol via the top of the distillation column, wherein the distillation column is supplied with≥50 mass% of the alcohol in the mixed feedstock in a gaseous state and part of theα-oxocarboxylic ester is hydrolyzed in advance prior to feeding the ester to the distillation column.
