1139225 Super-conductors SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL 16 Oct 1967 [18 Oct 1966] 46634/66 Headings H1A A5 A4A and A4D A normal conductor 4 is connected in parallel with a super-conductor 7 to provide protection against transient normality in the latter, electrical connection being made between the two conductors only at spaced intervals. The arrangement is such as to avoid or reduce the effect upon the superconductor of stress in the normal conductor. As shown the super-conductor is formed as a sinusoidal strip within a normally conducting cylinder 4, which may comprise a wound hollow bar (5), Fig. 2 (not shown), carrying a duct (6) for liquid helium coolant or for a stainless steel tensioning bar. The super-conductor 7, Fig. 3, may comprise a helical coil or a series of closed loops, and its cross-section and area of contact with the cylinder 4 may be varied along the axis of the cylinder 4 to take account of the variations in the direction of the magnetic field within the cylinder 4. The super-conductor 7 may be of Nb/Zr, Nb/Ti or Nb/Sn, and the normal conductor 4 may be of Cu or Al. The spaced connections between the two may be effected by brazing, soldering or welding.
