PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a residual ink quantity detecting apparatus, which allows a user to accurately confirm a residual ink quantity visually with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: An observation window formed with a transparent member is provided on part of an ink tank. In addition, a protruded ink-level-boundary forming section formed with a light transmissible transparent member is provided at the position opposite to the observation window. Because the transparent member has different reflectance in the ink and air, the residual amount of the ink can be detected by looking at the surface of the ink, which is formed at the protruded ink-level-boundary forming section formed with the transparent member, from the direction perpendicular to the ink surface through the transparent observation window visually.
