PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character string recognition method to read the character string where both a preprinted character and a printed character coexist, and also the character string recognition method to read the printed character by deleting the preprinted character from an overlaid character in a case where one pattern is formed with the preprinted character and the printed character overlaid by using information regarding a surrounding preprinted character. SOLUTION: The method is characterized in coping with a problem, in which one character pattern is formed with the preprinted character and the printed character being overlaid, by presenting a character string column to be read with multiple hypotheses for a character slicing and also based on character string notation knowledge. If an overlaid character is judged to exist in the character string, overlay of the preprinted character with the printed character is detected by using the character string notation knowledge, an extraction process of the printed character is performed to this overlaid character by applying plural of methods, and the character string recognition is reiterated. In the extraction process of the printed character, the extraction process is performed by using the information regarding a position, a size and the like of the preprinted character and the printed character other than the overlaid character.
