A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary cell exhibiting a large energy density and an excellent cycle performance thanks to use of an alloy containing Ni and Sn as the negative electrode active material and comprising a negative electrode having a mix layer containing the negative electrode active material, a positive electrode, and a nonaqueous electrolyte, characterized in that the negative electrode active material is an alloy containing 5-25 mass% of nickel and 75-95 mass% of tin, and the alloy contains an Sn4Ni3 phase and an Sn phase. The ratio of the content of the Sn4Ni3 phase to that of the Sn phase preferably satisfy the condition 0.2<=Z&LE;3 WHERE Z=M1/m2, m1 is the mass of the Sn4Ni3 phase, and m2 is the mass of the Sn phase. The mix layer preferably containing a carbon material. |
