PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission for a vehicle allowing multi-stage gear change of five forward speeds with further fewer frictional engagement devices using a plurality of sets of planetary gear devices. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission 10 comprises three sets of planetary gear devices, namely a first planetary gear device 18, a second planetary gear device 20, and a third planetary gear device 22, and a total of four frictional engagement devices formed of clutches C1 and C2 and brakes B1 and B2. A first gear change stage having the highest gear ratio is established by engaging the first brake B1 with the second brake B2. A second gear change stage is established by engaging the first clutch C1 with the second brake B2. A third gear change stage is established by engaging the first clutch C1 with the first brake B1. A fourth gear change stage is established by engaging the first clutch C1 with the second clutch C2. A fifth gear change stage is established by engaging the second clutch C2 with the first brake B1.
