A hand operated stapler has a shaped cam (48) at the front of the cover plate (6) for the magazine to provide a simple operation to load and assemble the instrument. By lifting and lowering the top housing (8) the cam causes the driver plate (44) to slide past the front of the cam until the cam locks into an aperture in the driver. Lifting the housing pulls the driver and cover plate upwards for simple loading of more staples with subsequent release of the housing enabling the driver to drop into the operating slot and leaving the stapler in the ready position.
