PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solidstate image pickup device for improving smear characteristics. SOLUTION: A solidstate image pickup device 20 comprises a light-receiving part 3 which is arranged on the surface of a substrate 2 and performs photoelectric conversion, a read gate 5 provided on one side of the light-receiving part 3, a channel stop 8 provided on the other side of the light-receiving part 3, vertical transfer registers 7 provided on the read gate 5 and the channel stop 8 on the opposite sides from the light-receiving part 3, transfer electrodes 10 provided almost immediately above the vertical transfer registers 7, and a light-shielding film 21 which covers the transfer electrodes 10 and forms an opening at least on a part immediately above the light-receiving part 3. A width W<SB>3</SB>of the read gate is larger than the width W<SB>4</SB>of the channel stop 8. The sum (W<SB>5</SB>+ W<SB>3</SB>) of a protruding width W<SB>5</SB>of a protrusion 21b on the read gate 5 and the width W<SB>3</SB>of the reading gate 5 is substantially equal to the sum (W<SB>6</SB>+ W<SB>4</SB>) of a protruding width W<SB>6</SB>on the channel stop 8 of the protrusion 21b and the width W<SB>4</SB>of the channel stop 8.
