[Also in Division F2] The ratio of a steplessly variable gear 4 driven by an engine 8 in a motor vehicle is varied in response to an engine driven spring-loaded centrifugal governor 3, an accelerator pedal 1 being linked to an engine throttle valve 7 and to the governor spring in such manner that for drive, the throttle opening and gear ratio are jointly controlled by the accelerator, while with the throttle closed the gear ratio may be varied by the accelerator to control the degree of engine braking. In Fig. 1, depression of the accelerator 1 from a position O-O opens the throttle 7 and increases compression of the governor spring causing an increase in the numerical gear ratio, while raising the accelerator above the position O-O similarly causes progressive increase of the gear ratio, the throttle remaining closed due to a one-way coupling 6 in the throttle linkage which transmits only thrust. The governor spring is loaded through a bell crank 2 and a lever 10 so that accelerator deflection in either direction from the position O-O increases the loading. The governor may act on the ratio shift control through electrical or hydraulic means. The control is such that the engine always operates at minimum specific fuel consumption. When a diesel engine is used, the throttle linkage controls fuel injection. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the bell crank 2 is replaced by a cam plate (9). Retaining means (11) may be provided to hold the accelerator in any selected position when the foot is removed therefrom. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the accelerator is movable only in one direction from a rest position, the connection to the throttle being through a lever (12) having a movable fulcrum (36) on a lever (18). Depression of the accelerator jointly increases throttle opening and governor spring loading. Initial depression of a service brake pedal (21) acts through a one-way coupling (20) on the lever (18) to move the fulcrum (36), progressively closing the throttle, until, with the fulcrum (36) in line with the throttle rod (22), the throttle is closed and independent of accelerator movement, which latter then affects only the gear ratio. Further depression of the pedal (21) applies a service wheel or exhaust brake. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) a lever (12) in the throttle linkage is fulcrumed at (13) on one end of a lever (14) which is prevented from pivoting by a member (15). Depression of a brake pedal acts through a one-way coupling to move the member (15), allowing the levers (14, 12) to float, so that the throttle is closed by a spring (23) and remains independent of the accelerator while the brake is depressed.
