PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine a characteristic by detecting the existence of an object such as an ink cartridge in a printing system. SOLUTION: This system is provided with a signal transmitting/receiving device that can transmits a signal by using an optical emitter 16 and receives a signal from an ink cartridge 24 as the object by using a photodetector 20 and a monitoring system 12 which is connected to the signal transmitting/receiving device in order to determine the characteristic of the ink cartridge 24 by operating the received signal. At least a part of the optical emitter 16 is housed by a polarizer 18 and the ink cartridge 24 is equipped with a reflecting surface 26 of which at least the part is housed by a polarizer 28. In the case where the signal is transmitted to the ink cartridge 24 from the signal transmitting/receiving device, when the polarizing directions of the polarizer 18 and the polarizer 28 are substantially the same, the polarizer 28 enables the signal to arrive at the reflecting surface 26 and is reflected thereby to return toward the signal transmitting/receiving device.
