PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording wherein printing on the reverse side is less, and running durability and head touch are good. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is provided with a magnetic layer on on surface of a support, and a back layer on the opposite surface thereof. In this case, the thickness of the back layer is 0.1 to 1μm, a long axis length is 0.05 to 0.5μm, and flat needle nonmagnetic inorganic powders and a binder are contained in which the aspect ratio älong width (short axis length)/short width} of a section having a maximum length (short axis length) of a section cut along the surface vertical to the long axis is 1.2 or higher.
