PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader equipped with a document read part which is in simple structure and is easy to wire. SOLUTION: The image reader is equipped with a 1st shield plate 11 which is provided nearby a read start position for a book document, a 2nd shield plate 12 which is provided nearby a sheet document read position, a sensor 6 which is provided on a reader part 3 and generates a signal when detecting the 1st or 2nd shield plate, a book document read position control part which performs control for moving the reader part to the read start position for the book document according to the position when the sensor 6 detects the 1st shield plate 11 and generates the signal, and a sheet document read position control means which performs control for moving the reader part 3 to the sheet document read position according to the position when the sensor 6 detects the 2nd shield plate 12 and generates the signal.
