PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of charging a battery cell array to a target voltage and further controlling the voltage level between cells. SOLUTION: The method is implemented as follows: the looped operation of cell voltage balancing in an appropriate balancing mode wherein performance parameters, balancing mode, and its parameter criteria with respect to each cell whose cell voltage is to be increased and balanced, and exiting criteria with respect to each balancing mode are established. During the operation, various corresponding parameters are used. A corresponding charging current is utilized to balance the cell voltages of the battery array, and charging is continued to a target voltage. If the exiting criteria are met, the balancing mode is ended, and the charging is terminated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
