<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical deflection device which changes the direction of light with an electric signal and an image display device which utilizes the optical deflection device. <P>SOLUTION: On the liquid crystal layer 5 side of substrates 3, 4 having the liquid crystal layer 5 interposed therebetween, a pair of refraction surfaces 10a, 10b being parallel to each other and forming an inclination angleθ(degrees) with an incidence plane 9 of the substrate 3 are formed. An optical path is translated in parallel relative to the original path by making outgoing light parallel to incident light in the case the incident light is refracted on the refraction surface 10a and is subsequently refracted again on the refraction surface 10b so as to be turned into the outgoing light. When the change of the refractive index of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 5 with respect to the incident light is represented byΔn and the amount of the parallel translation of the optical path with respect to the light incident on the incident plane 9 from the direction normal to the plane 9 by x(μm), the incidence angleα(degrees) of the light incident on the incident plane 9 of the substrate 3 with respect to the normal of the plane 9 satisfies relationsα≤¾aθ+b¾, a=-0.7Δn+0.35 and b=(11.6/x)-19. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
