PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bismuth oxide optical amplifying glass which is thermally stable and is suitable for ion exchange, and a process for manufacturing an optically amplifying waveguide. SOLUTION: The optical amplifying glass is manufactured by adding at least one chosen from the group consisting of Er, Tm, Pr and Dy to a matrix glass containing 5-55 mol% Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 10-85 mol% SiO<SB>2</SB>, 2-40 mol% Ga<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and <21 mol% TeO<SB>2</SB>, provided that Bi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>+Ga<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>+SiO<SB>2</SB>>70 mol%. The matrix glass contains≥7.6mol% alkali metal oxide. In the manufacturing process, the optical amplifying glass is subjected to two-step thermal ion exchange. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
