In an apparatus for injection moulding footwear an injection cylinder 22 is pivoted during a mould closing operation so that it remains in alignment with a wooden or metal last 10, an injection nozzle 34 being located in a port 38 formed between mould parts 12, 14 and communicating with a mould cavity 36. In the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2 two soles are moulded on to uppers on two inverted lasts 10 located either side of a central stationary mould part part 12 shaped to the contour of the sole, side plates 14, 16 closing with the side of part 12, and two vertically reciprocable mould parts 8 closing the top of each cavity 36. The lasts 10 and plates 14, 16 are moved towards the part 12, the plates 14, 16 contacting the nozzle 34 of an injection unit and pivoting it horizontally until each plate meets the part 12, opposed grooves 40, 41 thereon mating to form the port 38. Injection is stopped when a pressure limit switch 48 or an overflow limit switch 50 is actuated, the cylinder returning to its initial position under spring pressure when the mould parts move apart to facilitate removal of a shoe, the nozzle end of the cylinder being supported by an extension 44 and wheel 46 on a runway 42. In a modification, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), there is only one vertically reciprocable last 10 the injection cylinder being vertically pivoted about an axis (78) prior to injection by a support (82) which is connected to a last-support beam (70) and supports a wheel (84) connected to the nozzle end of the cylinder. The top mould plate (68) is only movable vertically when pressure of the material in the cavity exceeds a certain value, a cut-out limit switch (44) then being operable to stop injection. Side mould plates (74), (76) close to the side of the last around the nozzle (34) which seats in a port (38) formed by mating grooves (75), (77). In both embodiments the injection cylinder 22 is heated by heaters 30, the temperature of which is controlled and indicated by a regulator 32, the nozzle being cooled by fins 35 while a plasticizing screw 24 feeds material to the cavity 36. The mould parts may be moved together either hydraulically, pneumatically or mechanically and the screw is driven by a motor 26. The invention may also be used for moulding soles for subsequent attachment to uppers.
