The device has several sensor elements with individual sensor surfaces (21) forming a sensor matrix (22). The sensor elements can be addressed individually for contactless scanning by electronically selecting a number of elements and addressing them. Several sensor elements are arranged so that elements can be selected with individual sensor surfaces along a circular path (23). Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of contactlessly scanning the surface of an object, especially a coin or similar token.
