A proton-conducting, hybrid membrane (2) consisting of a channel-forming protein in a matrix is used as the electrolyte in a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell. A fuel cell (1) comprises at least the following: (a) a proton-conducting membrane (2) as electrolyte, (b) catalyst layers (3) covering both sides of the membrane, (c) gas-permeable electrodes in the form of an anode (4) and a cathode (5) on the outside of the catalyst layers, (d) electrically conductive plates (6) in close electrical contact with the electrodes and (together with the electrodes) defining gas-conducting channels and (e) gas inlets for hydrogen on one side and oxygen on the other. The membrane in this cell is a hybrid membrane comprising a channel-forming protein in a matrix.
