Traffic information acquisition method involves determination of the number of vehicles with mobile terminals belonging to a mobile phone network within a road section and determination of the time required for the vehicles to clear the road section using a data acquisition and analysis system. The latter is used to allocate road sections to location areas of the phone network and to determine the time taken to change between adjacent location areas in a location update process.
